Before You Start / Safety
- Park on level ground and keep fingers clear of pinch points.
- Keep lubricant away from top fabric and rear window surfaces.
- Cycle the top slowly and stop if any linkage binds.

Required Tools
- White lithium grease (or equivalent mechanism-safe grease)
- Silicone spray for weatherstrips (optional, separate step)
- Small applicator (cotton swab/artist brush)
- Clean microfiber cloths
Required Parts / Fluids
- Small amount of lubricant for pivots/hinges
- No replacement parts required for routine lubrication
Model-specific notes (NB1 vs NB2)
- NB1 and NB2 use the same basic manual soft-top linkage concept (front latch hooks, main side pivot arms, intermediate links, parcel-shelf hinges).
- Many cars now have replacement tops; frame lubrication points stay the same even when fabric brand differs.
- Lubricate metal pivot pins/hinges only. Do not grease latch faces, weatherstrip contact surfaces, or fabric seams.
Step-by-Step Procedure
1) Put the roof in the service position and inspect joints
Open the roof halfway (about 45°) so both side linkages are exposed.
Check these points on both left and right sides:
- Front latch-link pivots above the windscreen frame
- Main side pivot near shoulder-height (beside seat-belt tower)
- Mid-link scissor joints in the side frame
- Rear bow hinge area near the parcel shelf
Look for loose hardware, bent links, cracked plastic bushes, rust dust, or dried grease.
2) Clean first, then lubricate
Wipe each pivot area with a dry microfiber, then a lightly damp cloth if needed. Remove old yellow/brown grease before applying new lubricant.
Reason: fresh grease over grit becomes grinding paste and accelerates pin/bush wear.
3) Apply grease precisely to moving pins
Apply white lithium grease with a cotton swab/brush directly on each pivot pin and hinge knuckle.
- A pea-sized amount per pivot is enough.
- Move the joint by hand slightly, then add a tiny top-up if needed.
- Keep grease off: top fabric, rain rail, interior trim, and rubber seals.

4) Do not overspray interior/frame areas
Apply into a small container first if needed, then transfer with a swab/brush.
High-risk quote: “Don’t just spray the white lithium all over everything … it can discolor plastic…” https://motorweek.org/goss_garage/convertible_top_care/
5) Optional weatherstrip conditioning (separate from pivot grease)
Use silicone product on rubber weatherstrips via cloth application, not direct spray into cabin/top fabric.
6) Cycle top and re-check
Open/close the top several times, listening for squeaks and watching for smoother articulation. Wipe any sling-off immediately.

Torque Specs / Capacities
- Not applicable for routine lubrication only.
- If any frame hardware was loosened for access, tighten using year-specific Mazda workshop specs.
Verification / Post-service checks
- Top movement is smoother with reduced squeak/chatter.
- No grease contamination on fabric, seals, or trim.
- Latch and seal engagement remains normal after cycling.
