Before You Start / Safety

This guide is for Mazda MX-5 NB (1998-2005).

A tired NB shifter often feels notchy because the turret is dry/dirty, the lower nylon bushing is worn, or the inner boots are torn.

  • Work on a cool drivetrain.
  • Keep debris out of the open turret at all times.
  • Lay clean rags around the opening before removing the shifter.

Required Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver + trim tools (console/boots)
  • 10 mm socket and extension (shifter retaining plate)
  • Fluid syringe/pump (for 5-speed turret oil extraction/fill)
  • Pick tool for bushing removal
  • Lint-free towels

Required Parts / Fluids

  • Lower shifter bushing (recommended while open)
  • Inner/outer shift boots if cracked
  • Turret lubricant according to transmission type

Practical lubricant planning

  • NB 5-speed turret service fill: plan ~90 ml (about 3 fl oz).
  • Buy at least 250 ml compatible lubricant so you have enough for refill + cleanup.

Common owner-practice choices:

  • GL-4 75W-90 MTF (same family as gearbox fluid)
  • Small amount of Red Line Lightweight ShockProof for turret service on cars already using that strategy

5-speed vs 6-speed note (important)

  • 5-speed: widely serviced as a separate turret-oil cavity; refill quantity is typically around 90 ml.
  • 6-speed: community guidance is mixed; many owners do not add the same separate oil quantity used on 5-speed setups and instead service bushings/boots and apply appropriate assembly lubrication.

Use this safe rule: if you cannot positively confirm your exact 6-speed turret-fill method from your FSM/transmission documentation, do not blindly copy 5-speed fill quantity.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1) Baseline shift symptoms before disassembly

Record what you feel now:

  • notchiness when cold,
  • vague lateral gate feel,
  • weak spring-centering,
  • rattle/buzz in lever.

This helps verify improvement after service.

2) Remove console and expose shifter

  1. Unscrew shift knob.
  2. Remove center-console screws and lift console enough to access boots.
  3. Remove outer boot and then inner rubber boot.
  4. Clean the area around turret top plate thoroughly.

3) Remove shifter and inspect components

  • Remove turret top plate bolts.
  • Lift shifter straight up.
  • Inspect lower nylon bushing: flat-spotted, cracked, or missing bushing = replace.
  • Inspect turret cavity for dirty fluid, metallic sludge, or water ingress.

4) Service lubricant

5-speed method

  • Extract old fluid from turret cavity.
  • Refill with fresh lubricant to approximately 90 ml (3 fl oz).
  • Do not overfill to the brim.

6-speed method

  • Clean old contamination from turret area.
  • Replace bushing/boots as needed.
  • Apply only the lubrication strategy documented for your exact variant (do not auto-apply 5-speed quantity).

5) Reassemble correctly

  • Reinstall shifter and top plate evenly.
  • Ensure inner boot seats fully to keep heat and debris out.
  • Refit outer boot and console without pinching rubber.

6) Functional test

  • Engine off: row through all gates.
  • Engine running: verify reverse/1st engagement with clutch fully depressed.
  • Road test 10-15 minutes and compare against baseline symptoms.

Verification / Post-service checks

  • Cleaner gate definition and more consistent centering
  • Reduced notch/rattle after warm-up
  • No fluid seepage around turret plate/boots

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Filling a 6-speed turret with 5-speed quantity without confirmation.
  • Reusing torn inner boot (quickly re-contaminates turret).
  • Dropping dirt/screws into open turret.
  • Overtightening small top-plate hardware.
