Before You Start / Safety

  • Park on level ground, handbrake on, engine off.
  • Let the engine bay cool before working around intake piping and hot components.
  • If your NB uses an oiled reusable filter, avoid over-oiling (can contaminate the MAF path on some setups).

Manual-reference quote: “To help ensure enjoyable and trouble-free operation of your Mazda, read this manual carefully and follow its recommendations.” https://www.mazdausa.com/siteassets/pdf/owners-optimized/2005/mx5-miata/2005-mx-5-miata-owners-manual.pdf

Warning: “Do not apply oil until the air filter is completely dry.” https://www.knfilters.com/cleaning

Required Tools

  • Usually no tools (most NB airbox clips are hand-release)
  • Clean lint-free rag
  • Optional: Phillips screwdriver (if an intake clamp/aftermarket lid uses screws)

Required Parts / Fluids

  • New dry panel air filter for Mazda MX-5 NB (1998-2005) stock airbox, or
  • Clean/re-oiled reusable panel filter (if already installed)

Practical filter choices

  • OEM-style paper panel (recommended default): lowest risk for MAF contamination, replace on interval
  • Reusable cotton/oiled panel: acceptable only if serviced carefully and lightly oiled

If drivability consistency is your priority, a quality dry paper element is the conservative choice.

Model-specific notes (NB1 vs NB2)

  • NB1 (1998-2000) and NB2 (2001-2005) use the same basic stock-airbox service approach: unclip, open lid, swap panel, reseat lid.
  • Aftermarket intake/filter setups vary; this guide is for the factory-style airbox workflow.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1) Locate and open the airbox, then note filter orientation

Standing in front of the car, the stock airbox is the black rectangular plastic box on the intake side of the bay, connected to the intake tube/MAF housing.

Typical NB visual cues:

  • top lid with spring clips around the edge (often four clip points),
  • corrugated intake tube leaving the box toward the throttle body,
  • MAF section in the intake path immediately downstream of the filter housing.

Release clips, lift the lid enough to slide the panel out, and note how the old filter sits (gasket direction and corner orientation).

2) Remove the old filter and inspect the box

Lift the filter out. Wipe out loose debris in the lower airbox (leaves/sand). Do not push debris down the intake tract.

3) Install the new panel filter

Seat the new filter fully in its perimeter groove so the gasket seals evenly.

4) Close and latch the airbox fully

Lower lid carefully so the filter stays seated, then latch clips in a criss-cross pattern.

Final seal check:

  • no lifted lid corners,
  • no visible gasket pinch-out,
  • intake tube and MAF couplers undisturbed.

5) If using a reusable/oiled filter, service it correctly

Clean only with the manufacturer-approved process, rinse from clean side out, let dry fully, then oil lightly and evenly.

High-risk quote: “Rinse your air filter with cool low-pressure water from the clean side out…” https://www.knfilters.com/cleaning

High-risk quote: “Please note that the above process is the only approved procedure for maintaining your K&N® High-Flow Air Filter™.” https://www.knfilters.com/cleaning

6) Start engine and check for intake issues

Idle should be stable with no new warning lights. If a MAF-related code appears after servicing an oiled filter, inspect oiling level and clean MAF sensor per sensor-cleaner instructions.

Community confirmation quote: “If the MAF looks oily or dirty just remember to oil the filter less next time.” https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=502756

Torque Specs / Capacities

  • No standard torque spec is typically required for stock NB air-filter replacement (clip/latch closure service).
  • If your car has aftermarket intake hardware with screws/clamps, tighten to manufacturer instructions only.

Service Interval Guidance (NB 1998-2005)

  • Follow your region/year owner-manual maintenance schedule and inspect sooner for dusty use.
  • Practical aftermarket guidance (CarCareKiosk) suggests replacing about yearly or around 20,000 miles (~32,000 km) under normal use, with shorter intervals in dusty/sandy conditions.
  • Practical NB community consensus: condition-based checks (heavy debris loading, visible contamination, drivability symptoms) are often more useful than calendar age alone for the panel element.

Community confirmation quote: “Cheapest I can find, no oiled filters!” https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=770376

Verification / Post-service checks

  • Airbox lid flush and all clips latched
  • No whistling/air leak noises on light rev
  • No CEL after short test drive

Notes for consistent results

  • If you switch from oiled media to dry paper, reset your baseline and monitor idle/CEL behavior for one week.
  • If fuel trims or MAF-related codes recur after reusable-filter servicing, replace with a fresh dry paper panel and re-evaluate before deeper diagnosis.
