Before You Start / Safety
This guide is for Mazda MX-5 NB (1998-2005).
Exterior bulb jobs are easy, but recurring failures usually come from one of three causes:
- wrong bulb type,
- socket/ground corrosion,
- water ingress into housing.
- Switch lights off and let bulbs cool.
- Handle bulbs by base, not glass.
- Avoid touching hot glass or forcing brittle sockets.
Required Tools
- Small screwdriver/trim tool for access covers
- Gloves
- Electrical contact cleaner
- Lint-free cloth
- Dielectric grease (small amount, optional for connector protection)
Required Parts / Fluids
- Correct replacement bulbs for each failed function
- Replacement socket/pigtail if heat-damaged or corroded
Practical bulb-selection rules
- Match base type and filament style exactly.
- For combined tail/brake circuits, use the correct dual-filament bulb type.
- Do not force LED/incongruent bulbs into incandescent circuits without confirming flash/load compatibility.
Quick example logic:
- dual-function lamp needs dual-circuit bulb,
- single-function lamp uses single-circuit bulb.
Where to access on NB
For rear lamps on NB:
- open trunk/boot,
- remove interior trim panel behind lamp area,
- find bulb sockets at rear of lamp housing,
- twist socket out to service bulb.
For license plate lamps:
- access is typically at rear plate-lamp housing from trunk-lid/outer housing area depending assembly style.
Step-by-Step Procedure
1) Confirm exact failed function
Check each individually:
- tail/running lights,
- brake lights,
- turn signals,
- reverse lights,
- license plate lights.
Use helper or reflective surface to verify both sides.
2) Open housing and inspect for moisture first
Before removing bulb, inspect inside housing/socket area for:
- fog film or droplets,
- white mineral traces,
- green terminal corrosion,
- heat-darkened plastic.
If moisture is present, fix sealing issue or bulb failures will repeat.
3) Remove bulb and inspect socket condition
- Remove bulb per socket style (push-turn or straight pull).
- Check terminal spring tension.
- Clean light corrosion with contact cleaner and dry fully.
If socket is loose, burnt, or brittle, replace socket/pigtail.
4) Install correct new bulb
- Verify code against removed bulb/housing marking.
- Seat fully and lock positively.
- Apply tiny dielectric grease to connector exterior contact areas only (not on bulb glass).
5) Reassemble with seal integrity
- Refit socket squarely.
- Ensure gasket and access covers sit fully to keep water out.
- Refit trim without pinching wires.
6) Function and quality checks
Verify:
- left/right turn cadence is normal,
- brake brightness is clearly higher than tail brightness,
- both license plate lights work and match,
- no flicker when tapping housing lightly.
Quick fault split
- One side dim/odd cross-function glow: likely bad local ground/socket contact.
- Both sides out for one function: check shared fuse/feed first.
- Rapid hyperflash after bulb change: incorrect bulb/load behavior or circuit mismatch.
Verification / Post-service checks
- All exterior lighting functions pass
- No flicker/chatter over bumps
- No condensation after rain/wash cycle
