Before You Start / Safety

This guide is for Mazda MX-5 NB (1998-2005) only.

Tire condition is a primary safety item. Worn or uneven tires reduce grip and can hide suspension/alignment faults.

Warning: Inspect tires when cold and on a level surface for consistent readings. https://www.bridgestonetire.com/learn/maintenance/how-to-check-your-tire-tread-depth/

High-risk quote: Minimum legal tread depth varies by region, but waiting to legal-minimum depth significantly reduces wet-weather safety margin. https://www.discounttire.com/learn/tire-tread-depth

Manual-reference quote: Mellens indexes NB-era manuals (1999-2001 and 2005), so Mazda tire-pressure baselines and chassis alignment specs should be confirmed by exact year/VIN before corrective action. https://www.mellens.net/mazda/index.html

Required Tools

  • Tread depth gauge (preferred)
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Flashlight
  • Chalk/marker for noting wear zones

Required Parts / Fluids

  • None for inspection-only work
  • Replacement tires if below service threshold

Model-specific notes (NB1 vs NB2)

NB1 (1998-2000)

  • OEM wheel/tire sizes may differ from current setup; many NB1 cars run aftermarket wheel/tire combos.

NB2 (2001-2005)

  • Same caution: alignment interpretation depends on actual tire size, wheel offset, and suspension modifications.

Modified ride height/wheel specs can change wear behavior significantly, so compare wear maps against your actual setup, not OEM assumptions.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1) Record pressures first

Before tread measurement, set and record cold pressures.

Incorrect pressure can mimic alignment or suspension wear patterns.

2) Measure tread depth at multiple points

For each tire, measure:

  • inner shoulder,
  • center,
  • outer shoulder,
  • at multiple circumferential positions.

Log values in mm or 32nds consistently.

Practical safety thresholds:

  • Replace immediately at legal minimum tread depth (often around 1.6 mm / 2⁄32 in, jurisdiction dependent).
  • For strong wet-weather margin, many drivers plan replacement near 3.0 mm / 4⁄32 in.

3) Identify wear patterns

  • Center worn more: often overinflation.
  • Both shoulders worn: often underinflation.
  • One edge worn: often toe/camber alignment issue.
  • Cupping/scalloping: often damping/balance/suspension issue.

4) Cross-check with handling symptoms

Note pull, vibration, tramlining, or noise and correlate with wear map.

Wear pattern + symptom is more useful than either alone.

5) Decide action path

  • Pressure correction + monitor if mild and even.
  • Alignment check when edge wear appears.
  • Suspension/steering inspection if cupping or persistent asymmetry is present.
  • Tire replacement if near/under safe depth or damaged.

6) Re-check interval

Re-inspect after 500–1,000 km (or sooner if abnormal wear is severe).

If edge wear is progressing quickly, shorten interval to 200-300 km until alignment/suspension faults are corrected.

Torque Specs / Capacities (if applicable)

  • Wheel lug torque: follow NB year/VIN specification (see wheel-lug guide/FSM).

Verification / Post-service checks

  • Wear trend stabilizes across inner/center/outer zones
  • Steering pull/vibration reduced after corrections
  • Pressures remain stable between checks

Uncertainty / Open Questions

  • Exact legal minimum tread depth and inspection rules vary by country/region.
  • Therefore legal pass/fail thresholds are explicitly deferred to local regulations and year/VIN documentation.
