Before You Start
Work on a level surface and ensure the engine is warm, not hot. A warm engine drains faster and carries more contaminants out with the old oil.
Required Tools
- 14 mm socket and ratchet (drain plug)
- Oil filter wrench
- Drain pan (at least 6 L)
- Funnel
- Gloves, rags, brake cleaner (for cleanup)
Required Materials
- Engine oil matching your NB manual viscosity/spec (5W-30 is common for many climates)
- Buy 4.0 L so you have enough for refill plus level correction
- Replacement oil filter
- New sump plug crush washer
Step-by-Step
1. Raise and secure the front of the car
Use ramps or a jack and stands on stable points. Confirm the car is stable before getting underneath.
2. Locate drain plug and filter before loosening anything
- Drain plug: bottom of the steel oil pan (lowest point of sump).
- Oil filter: spin-on canister mounted on engine block side, accessible from below on most NB cars.
Pre-locating both points helps you position pan and tools correctly.
3. Drain the old oil
Place the drain pan under the sump plug, crack plug loose with 14 mm socket, then remove by hand while pushing inward slightly to avoid early spill.
Warning: oil may still be hot enough to burn skin.
Allow full drain (typically 10-20 minutes depending on oil temperature).
4. Replace the filter correctly
Remove old filter, confirm old gasket came off with filter, and wipe sealing surface clean.
Prep new filter:
- wet gasket with a thin film of fresh oil,
- pre-fill filter only if mounting orientation allows without spilling.
Install filter hand-tight only (typically gasket contact + about 3/4 turn).
5. Reinstall the sump plug
Fit a new crush washer and tighten the sump plug to specification.
Torque spec: 30-40 Nm
6. Refill and verify
Add most of expected fill first (for example ~3.5 L), wait briefly, then check dipstick and top up gradually.
Start engine 20-30 seconds, shut down, wait 5 minutes, then set final level near the full mark (not overfilled).
7. Final leak and cleanliness check
Inspect around drain plug and filter seam with a light. Clean any residue so fresh leaks are easy to spot at recheck.
Post-Service Checklist
- Confirm no leaks at filter and drain plug
- Confirm oil level at full mark (engine off, after drain-back wait)
- Recheck for leaks and level after first full heat cycle / next day
- Reset your service reminder or log mileage/date/oil brand/viscosity
