Before You Start / Safety

A damaged stud is a safety-critical fault. Do not keep driving normally with stripped/broken threads.

High-risk quote: “A damaged stud can lead to unsafe driving conditions and should be addressed as soon as possible.” https://www.autozone.com/diy/tire-wheel/how-to-replace-a-wheel-stud

Warning: “Raise and support the vehicle under frame members.” https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/car-projects/how-to-change-broken-or-damaged-wheel-studs

Also plan for model/axle access differences before disassembly:

  • some corners allow in-car stud replacement,
  • some may require hub/knuckle removal or pressing.

Required Tools

  • Floor jack + axle stands + wheel chocks
  • Breaker bar and correct lug socket
  • Hammer and punch/drift
  • Ratchet/socket set
  • Torque wrench (final wheel-nut torque)
  • Stud installer tool or sacrificial/open lug nut + hardened washers
  • Wire brush and brake cleaner for hub face cleanup

Required Parts / Fluids

  • Correct replacement stud(s) for your NB hub position
  • New lug nut(s) for replaced stud(s) (recommended)

High-risk quote: “Buy two new lug nuts for each stud being replaced. The wear incurred during installation of a new stud makes the lug nut unusable.” https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/car-projects/how-to-change-broken-or-damaged-wheel-studs

Model-specific notes (NB1 vs NB2)

  • NB1 and NB2 both use hub-mounted press/spline style studs, but real-world clearance can vary by brake/hub combination and aftermarket parts.
  • If the stud cannot clear behind the flange safely, stop and switch to hub-off service instead of forcing it.

Manual-reference quote: “1999-2001 Mazda Miata Service Repair Manual” and “2005 Mazda Miata Service Repair Manual” are listed in the MX-5 factory manual index. https://www.mellens.net/mazda/

Step-by-Step Procedure

1) Confirm the fault and plan corner access

Remove wheel, inspect threads, and confirm the stud is actually damaged (not just a bad lug nut). Decide whether in-car replacement has rear clearance at that corner.

2) Lift and secure the car

Chock opposite wheels, loosen nuts slightly, lift, and support on stands before removing the wheel.

3) Remove brake components as needed

Typically rotor (and sometimes caliper/bracket) must be moved for access.

  • Support caliper safely (do not hang by hose).
  • Keep track of hardware orientation.

4) Drive out the damaged stud

Use punch + hammer to drive the old stud backward out of the hub flange.

High-risk quote: “The base of the stud and flange are splined to keep the stud from spinning. Once the stud clears those splines, it will come out easily.” https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/car-projects/how-to-change-broken-or-damaged-wheel-studs

5) Install and seat the new stud

Insert the new stud from behind the flange, align splines, then seat it using a proper stud installer or washer+lug-nut method.

  • Pull it in gradually.
  • Keep the stud straight while seating.
  • Stop once the head is fully flush against the hub backside.

Community quote: “Take the wheel off, hammer out the broken stud, and press a new one in” https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/60pftv/any_tips_on_getting_this_wheel_stud_out_that/.json

Community confirmation quote: “In the absence of a press, you can tap the new stud in to start it… and pull the stud in by tightening it. Make sure your splines are lined up before you start.” https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/60pftv/any_tips_on_getting_this_wheel_stud_out_that/.json

6) If rear clearance is poor, switch strategy

Do not grind critical hub material or force a crooked install. On some setups the practical path is hub-off + press service.

Community quote: “on the rear, the studs run into the piece in back when you try to remove them” https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/1c5g4ap/help_anyone_have_experience_removing_and/.json

7) Reassemble and torque wheels correctly

Reinstall rotor/caliper, reinstall wheel, hand-start nuts, lower car, then final torque in a star pattern using your year/market NB spec.

Torque Specs / Capacities

  • Wheel nut final torque: use year/market NB factory specification.
  • Do not publish/assume one universal number for all wheel/hardware combinations.
  • If using aftermarket wheel nuts or seats, follow wheel/nut manufacturer requirements.

Verification / Post-service checks

  • New stud head fully seated (flush to flange backside)
  • Lug nut spins on by hand without binding
  • No wheel wobble/noise on short test drive
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after short bedding interval (about 50-100 km)

Uncertainty / Open Questions

  • Access method differs by axle/corner and by installed brake/hub parts; community reports confirm some rear combinations are significantly harder than typical front service.
  • Browser control timed out during this run; research continuity used successfully fetched pages and direct community JSON endpoints.
  • Exact NB wheel-nut torque is intentionally deferred to year/VIN manual in this guide because published online values vary by source and hardware context.
