Before You Start / Safety
- Car on level ground, securely supported, wheels removed.
- Brake fluid damages paint quickly; cover fenders and wipe spills immediately.
- Never allow the master reservoir to run dry during bleeding.
If pedal remains spongy after repeated correct bleeding, stop and inspect for leaks, stuck caliper sliders, or master-cylinder issues.
Required Tools
- Jack, axle stands, wheel chocks
- Clear bleed hose + waste bottle
- Flare/bleeder wrench (often 8 mm or 10 mm)
- Gloves, eye protection, rags
- Helper (2-person method) or pressure bleeder
Required Parts / Fluids
- Fresh unopened brake fluid matching cap/manual spec
- Practical flush quantity: 1.0 L minimum
- If fluid is very old/dark or system was opened: plan 1.5 L to avoid running short
Practical fluid guidance
- DOT 4 glycol-based fluid is a common NB service choice.
- DOT 5.1 glycol-based fluid is generally compatible with DOT 3/4 systems when spec allows.
- Do not use DOT 5 silicone in DOT 3/4 designed systems.
Where parts are on MX-5 NB
Brake fluid reservoir
- Rear of engine bay at firewall, mounted on top of brake master cylinder.
- Translucent plastic body with MIN/MAX marks.
- Black cap with DOT class marking.
Bleeder screws
- One bleeder at each caliper.
- Look near upper/back area of caliper body.
- Small nipple with hex base, usually protected by a rubber cap.
Clean around cap and bleeders before opening to keep dirt out of the hydraulic system.
Step-by-Step Procedure
1) Baseline and pre-fill
- Remove reservoir cap and fill close to MAX.
- Confirm no external leaks at master, hard lines, hoses, and calipers.
- Keep fluid bottle capped between pours (it absorbs moisture quickly).
2) Use a fixed bleed sequence
For left-hand-drive NB layout, use far-to-near sequence from master cylinder:
- Right Rear (RR)
- Left Rear (LR)
- Right Front (RF)
- Left Front (LF)
Use the same order for the whole flush.
3) Bleed one corner (2-person method)
At each caliper:
- Remove rubber cap and fit clear hose tightly to bleeder.
- Crack bleeder about 1/4 turn.
- Helper presses pedal smoothly and holds.
- Close bleeder before helper releases pedal.
- Repeat until flow is clear and bubble-free.
Practical per-corner flush volume target: roughly 150-250 ml depending line length and fluid condition.
4) Reservoir control (critical)
After every few pedal strokes (or after each mini-cycle), check reservoir and top up.
If reservoir runs dry, air enters the system and you must repeat bleed work.
5) Pressure-bleeder method notes (if used)
- Keep bleeder pressure moderate and stable (shop-dependent, commonly around 1 bar / 15 psi range).
- Still monitor reservoir level and corner flow quality.
- Do not over-pressurize old reservoirs/caps.
6) Finalize each corner
- Tighten bleeder securely.
- Wipe area clean and reinstall rubber cap.
- Move to next wheel in sequence.
7) Final pedal and leak checks
- Set reservoir near MAX and close cap.
- Engine OFF: pump pedal until firm.
- Engine ON: slight assist drop is normal, but pedal should not sink slowly.
- Hold steady pedal pressure 20-30 seconds; pedal should remain stable.
8) Controlled road test
- Start with very low-speed stops in a safe area.
- Confirm straight braking and consistent pedal feel.
- Recheck calipers/bleeders for seepage after test drive.
Post-service verification checklist
- Pedal firm and repeatable hot/cold
- No seepage at bleeders or hose joints
- Reservoir level stable after first drive
- Vehicle brakes straight with no pull
Disposal / housekeeping
- Collect used fluid in sealed container.
- Dispose via local hazardous-waste rules; never pour to drains/ground.
- Store fresh/unopened fluid sealed away from moisture.
